Example Itinerary

Note that your mountain leader may alter this itinerary without prior warning due to changing weather or other safety considerations.

CCC Reconnaissance - 98km +5500m / -5700m height

Day 1 evening :

Arrive at designated hotel and meet with trek leader for welcome and briefing. Bag check is mandatory. Chance to purchase last minute personal items. Overnight at hotel.


Day 2 :

Depart from Courmayeur Italy. Follow the CCC or UTMB course trail up towards the Grand Col Ferret. Ascend the Tête de la Tronche (CCC) and Grand Col Ferret (UTMB and CCC). Descend to La Fouly and Champex Lac. Overnight in comfortable auberge in Champex. This is slightly more than a mountain marathon.

Day 3 :

Run from Champex Lac via Bovine, the Col de la Forclaz, Trient, Les Tseppes, descend to Vallorcine and the Col des Montets. Optional ascent to Tête aux Vents and the Flégère. Descend to Chamonix. This day is either slightly shorter than or slightly longer than a mountain marathon. Overnight in Chamonix hotel.


Day 4 :

Depart Chamonix hotel at normal check out time. Guests should arrange their own transportation from Chamonix homewards.


We can arrange transport from Chamonix to Courmayeur for the start of the running.


A support vehicle is available as an option to bring extra gear to the refuge at Champex, or you can choose to carry night clothes with you, making your pack only slightly heavier than on race day.


A longer version of this trip is available (3-4 days), stopping at Val Ferret Italy, Champex Lac Switzerland and/or Trient Switzerland for shorter daily runs.


A UTMB version of this trip is available along the UTMB course, starting in Chamonix. The second half of that trip follows the CCC Reconnaissance.


You can choose to go faster than the group pace, but should wait at designated stops for the rest of the group to catch up, or loop back occasionally. We will not leave any runner behind and therefore the guide will run only slightly ahead of the pace of the slowest runner.


If you cannot complete the run for any reason, we will arrange transport only from the closest drivable point to your stopping location and back to your starting hotel, however we cannot refund your trip price. You must have valid mountain rescue insurance.

Equipment required :

A doctors note indicating you are fit for mountain marathon running is required. You should carry a 15L pack with sleeping clothes, rain and warm layers.

All nights in huts or hotels. All refuges bar one have shower facilities. Detailed suggested equipment check list provided with booking or see the Ultra Trail Tour du Mont Blanc website for details of required gear.

Packs should not be too heavy but MUST contain essential safety gear as outlined by the UTMB organizers. If you are not using the optional support vehicle you  must carry a separate set of nightclothes to wear at the hut.


Fitness level :

Very fit. This is a trip is designed for trail runners who are capable of running 4-8 hours a day at a reasonable pace in mountainous conditions.  

Ideally you should have completed at least one marathon or semi-marathon and have been training running on hills for at least 2-3 months prior to the course start date.

Running times during the tour are 5-8 hours per day depending upon your pace, with some steep uphills and downhills.

Lunch breaks will be short, mimicking real running conditions. Full dinners prepared at the refuge. We will use water refills at refuges and water sources along the race route.

Snow, rain, wind, poor visibility etc. could be encountered at any time of the year on this tour due to changing mountain conditions.

Have you dreamed of completing one of the famous ultra trail races such as the North Face Ultra Trail Tour du Mont Blanc, the North Face CCC (Courmayeur, Chamonix, Champex), or the North Face Sur les Traces des Ducs des Savoie ?


Perhaps you are entering the race and want to do a reconnaissance of the course (we suggest doing this no later than one month before your actual race).


If so then this could be the trip for you. Your guide has run at least the CCC race (98km) one or more times.


During the trip, we will run on these famous trails, walking the uphills and running the flats and downhills at a medium pace.


You are able to bring a small camera such as a mobile phone camera to take photos. All running will be during the daylight hours.
